Q. I’ve been having some problems some leaks in my roof. I know I need to get it repaired, but I want to make sure I can get it done at the best price possible. My friend’s buddy is a handyman and he said he can easily fix what he seems to think is a minor issue. His quote is way, way less than what some of the local roofing companies have quoted me. This guy isn’t a licensed contractor, but I trust my buddy’s recommendation. Is there really any harm in hiring him as opposed to Charlotte roof repair company?

A. Yikes! You should never, ever hire an unlicensed contractor to do any serious repairs on your home. If you missed that the first time, we’ll say it again.

Never, ever, hire an unlicensed contractor to do a serious repair on your home.

There are plenty of reasons that unlicensed contractors (or contracting companies) undercut their licensed counterparts, and each one is scarier than the next.

Number one, it’s probably safe to assume that an unlicensed contractor doesn’t carry workers compensation insurance. Is this really a big deal? YES.

Under normal circumstances, when someone is injured on the job, they can seek compensation and damages through the normal workers compensation channels.  But… if you’re working with an unlicensed contractor, and they’re injured on the job, you could find yourself facing a potential lawsuit.

Second, if the contractor somehow manages to damage your neighbor’s property—you could find yourself on the hook for those repairs and damages as well. If you hire an unlicensed contractor, you can (and are likely) to be held liable for their negligence. (We’re not even going to touch on what could happen if the contractor injures a passerby—but as you can image, the scenario won’t be pretty.)

Sure, you can save a few bucks by hiring an unlicensed roofing repairman, but the risks far outweigh the rewards.

Not to mention that you always run the risk that the repairs won’t be done correctly (and thus, you’ll find yourself in a position where you need to hire a different company to clean up the first company’s mess) or they won’t be completed at all.
